First, you’ll learn about what CSR and Sustainability are. You’ll cover the relevant legislation and consider CSR and sustainability in the context of Facilities Management.

You’ll learn about the environmental impact of FM services, how facilities managers can mitigate, reduce or manage the impact their activities have on the environment and consider new and ongoing developments in environmental management and how they can affect Facilities Managers.

You’ll then look at managing waste, the principles of waste minimisation and the methods, systems and legislation related to waste management.

Finally, you’ll investigate ways to improve environmental awareness and responsibility

Understand Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility

  • Explain the legislation that is associated with sustainability and environmental issues
  • Explain the role and responsibility that a facilities manager has in supporting a Corporate Social Responsibility policy

Understand the impact of facilities management on the environment

  • Explain the range of impacts of facilities management activities on the environment
  • Explain how the facilities manager can mitigate, reduce or manage the impact of their activities on the environment
  • Explain the environmental advantages and disadvantages inherent within the various resources utilised by facilities managers
  • Explain new and ongoing developments in environmental management and explain how these may affect facilities managers

Understand how to manage waste and its safe disposal

  • Explain the principles of waste minimisation
  • Describe the methods and systems used to manage waste
  • Identify the relevant legislation in relation to handling, transporting, treating and disposing of waste

Understand how to improve environmental awareness and responsibility

  • Explain how the facilities manager can influence uses of natural resources, consumption and emissions control to improve the environment

  • Explain how the facilities manager can increase awareness and involvement of staff, contractors and suppliers in relation to environmental policies and sustainability

This course is aimed at people already managing day-to-day Facilities Management operations, who want to develop a deeper understanding of corporate social responsibility, sustainability and their obligations under sustainability legislation.

If you need to know more about how to improve the sustainability culture within your organisation and how to minimise the impact of your activities on the environment, this course is for you.

It’s also ideal for those who are studying for their IWFM Level 4 qualifications, perhaps by distance learning, who would like some face-to-face tuition to support their studies.

Although this course is open for anyone to attend and is not assessed, the content has been developed in line with the IWFM Level 4 unit FM4.19 – Understanding sustainability and environmental issues and their impact on facilities management.

This makes it ideal for IWFM qualification learners who are looking to support their studies with face-to-face tuition.

For those who are not currently studying for a qualification, there is the option to undertake the assessment for the FM4.19 unit. This will then count towards a qualification if you choose to undertake one in the future.
